The Winning Family Genealogy

The Winnings are the family of my paternal grandmother, Mary Nugeon (Winning) Eldridge.  She was raised by her grandparents in the Gorbals & Tradeston areas of Glasgow after her parents split up.  She came to New Brunswick in 1913 to work as a domestic, where she met my grandfather.  While the Winning name is Scottish in origin, it appears her ancestors were Irish.

One of her great uncles, Robert Winning and his wife Jane Smith & family, also immigrated to Canada, to Simcoe, Ontario.  One of Robert's sons, Robert, Jr, and family also ended up in Winnipeg, but 40 years earlier than my grandmother This other family left Winnipeg for Neepawa, Manitoba, before my grandmother came here in 1947.

(James Winning from Glasgow, the son of James Winning, a butcher, also came to Winnipeg in the early 1900's and lived on Atlantic Ave., the same street where my grandparents lived.  This James Winning served in the First World War and was an active labour leader during the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919.  I haven't yet determined if he is related to us.)

Much of the following information comes from the 1841-1911 census records of Scotland, plus birth, marriage & death records from Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
I have also used Canadian Census Records from 1881 - 1921, and information in the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC Archives, plus Ontario records and some cemetery records..

I have observed that records of the census, births, marriages and deaths often appear to be contradictory, with discrepancies in ages and birth places, and even names.

Glen was visiting his cousin Len Barry at the Basin Bar in Beaver Harbour, NB.  Glen, Carman and Len were playing on the banks

NOTES and REFERENCES

1.    There is a recorded death of David Winning, a married stone miner, on Mar 2, 1856 at the age of 54 in Kilbarchan, Renfrew.  His father was George Winning, a weaver, and his mother was Sarah Cuming.  Both parents were deceased.  He was buried in the Johnstone Church Yard.
(The only age-comparable David Winning I can locate a reference for (see the Wintrode Family Tree on Ancestry .com) has his birth around 1803 in Lanark and his marriage and death also in Lanark.  The death location doesn't fit, and I don't have the date of death.)

If the age at death was 44 instead of the recorded 54, this would match other records - the year of death, the occupation, and the location of the burial would fit.

Cuming is a Scottish name but there are records of migrations to Ireland.

2.   The 1851 Census of Waterside, Dalmellington, Ayrshire, at 50 Waterside Vil?:
David Winnen - 38 - Ironstone miner born Ireland
    Rachel - 32 - born Ireland
    David - 12 - born Ireland - ironstone miner
    James - 7 - born Ireland - scholar
    Robert  - 2 - born Dalmellington, Ayrshire

3.   (The 1841 census of Paisley, formerly part of High Parish, Renfrew, p 12, has Rachel Rice, age 15, d/o Mrs Samuel Rice (40), a grocer, both born in Scotland.  Living with the family is an Alexander Kesson?  (name difficult to read) (age 85) - is this Rachel’s grandfather or great grandfather?  Rachel's age and birthplace may not match the Rachel who married David Winning.)

4.   On the Winning message board on Genealogy.com, I saw the following:
          Winning Message Board
Posted by: Diane Shaw      Date: April 28, 2001 at 08:13:02
Robert Winning married Jane Smith, 10 Oct 1869 Frederick Street Church, Glasgow, Scotland. They immigrated to Canada in 1872.His parents names were David Winning and Rachael McKay. Robert had 3 brothers: James (1844); David (1839) - both born Ireland - and William. Robert and Jane's family were Robert, William Jack, Jean, John, David, Elizabeth, Rachel, Mary, James, Victor, Percival and Margaret.
Have information on most of the above. I have old pictures some of which need to be identified.

    On other message boards:
Winning Message Board  by Diane Shaw and ?
    I saw the following:
David Winning married Rachel McKay on July 7, 1838 in Grange, county Antrim, Ireland.  Their children were:
          David, born 1839 Ireland
          James, born 1842 Ireland
          William, born 1843? Ireland
          James, born 1844 Ireland
          Robert, born 1845
The boards said some moved to Canada, including Robert in 1871

5.   On some message boards dated around 2001, I saw the following:

Also, David Winning who married Rachel McKay,  had a brother William, born 1813, who married Jane Moore, possibly in County Antrim, and a sister Margaret born 1817.

Another possible brother was John, who had a son Peter.  (There is a reference to a Margaret Thomas here. Is this the sister Margaret?)

There was a  Peter Winning who married in Dublin in 1872.  A son Samuel was born in 1875 - he was killed in Liverpool.

I was unable to locate any Winnings in Grange in the 1851 Irish Census.
Note that most Irish census records were destroyed by fire in the 1920's.

6.   The 1861 census of  Johnstone, Paisley Abbey, Renfrew, at McQuaker's Lane. (transcription from Ancestry.com)
Rachael Winning - 41 - born Ireland -Servant
    James Winning - 18 - born Ireland - baker's apprentice
Robert Winning - 12 - born DalcnSluagton, Ayrshire (probably Dalmellington) - tailor's appprentice
William Winning - 9 -  born DalcnSluagton, Ayrshire (probably Dalmellington)
Janet Tait - 13 - born Dalry, Ayrshire - boarder - mill worker

Also, in the 1861 census of Chalmers, Glasgow, there is a James Winning listed as a baker, age 17, born Lanark, Glasgow and living apart from his family.
As the marriage of James Winning occured in Renfrew, the Glasgow James would probably not be the James Winning in this family.

7.   The 1871 census of High Church, Glasgow St. John, Lanark - 72 Barrack St.  (transcription from Ancestry.com)
Rachel Winning - 52 - born Ballarona, Ireland (possibly Ballyroan in County Laois, Ireland, or Ballymena, County Antrim Northern Ireland)
living with her were Donald Campbell, lodger and his 2 sons, John (10) and Francis (5), and Annie Oliver (25), another lodger

8.   The marriage records of the District of Abbey in Renfrew, has the marriage on Oct 31, 1866, of James Winning (22), baker, to Sarah Kennedy (22), thread worker.  James is the son of David Winning, Miner (deceased) and Rachel Winning (MS. Rice).  Sarah is the daughter of James Kennedy, Shoemaker,  and Jean Kennedy (MS. Anderson.)  Witnesses were Robert Winning and Janet Sagget.

9.   The 1851 Scottish Census of Paisley Abbey, Elderslie, Renfrewshire, ED 5, p 22, living at 40 Elderslie:

LAST OF PIONEER FAMILY DIES IN NEEPAWA HOSPITAL
Funeral service for Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Winning, 85, Lobbville, Man., who died in Neepawa District Memorial Hospital, Saturday October 20, 1954, after a short illness, was held in the United Church, Neepawa, Tuesday, October 23 at 2 p.m. Rev. W.H. McDonald officiated and burial was in the family plot, Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: four grandsons, Thos. M. Turnbull, Richard J. Turnbull, Peter B. Winning, David B. Winning, and James Donaldson and John Crammond.

Mrs. Winning, the former Maria Elizabeth Hamilton, was born in Emmett County, Iowa, U.S.A. and came to Canada in 1877 as a small child with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Robinson Hamilton and family. After spending their first winter in Palestine, Man. (now Pine Creek) they located on a homestead six miles south of Neepawa. She received her education in Osprey and Neepawa schools. Her marriage to Robert Winning took place in Neepawa, where they made their home from 1899 to 1910, when they left to reside in Winnipeg. In 1929 they moved to Helston, then to Lobbville. Mr Winning died 1 April 1948.

The last surviving member of a family of 10, she was a sister of Mrs. J.J. Hamilton, wife of the first mayor of Neepawa; B.R. Hamilton, Jos. H.; W.M.; James and Jack Hamilton.; Mrs. George Mathers and Mrs. A. E. Kellington well known pioneer residents of Neepawa.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Mary Comer, New York; Miss Doris Winning; Mrs Enid Turnbull; Mrs. Edna Williams, Winnipeg; three sons Robert C. Winning, Winnipeg; David R. and William J., Lobbville, Man. There are 15 Grandchildren.

Notes from Darlene Perrett re the obituary.  March 08, 2004

“The "R" in David's name is Robinson. We knew most Maria's children quite well. We own the Robert Sr. land they speak of at Helston. Perett's have rented the "Lobbville" land from Dave, Bill and Doris for more than 35 years. Doris ended up owning Bill's land and when Doris died Dave's son, David B. inherited it. When Bob Jr. died Doris ended up owning it and when Doris died she willed it to one of Bob's twin daughters. The first twin promptly died and she left it to her twin and she immediately sold it. When Dave died he left it to his 4 kids. And now that one of his daughters (Heather) has just passed away, David B. has just bought the other 3 out.”
