Pask Family Page (This gives the family of Thomas Scott & Ann Pask)

The genealogy:

Based on information provided by Gladys (Scott) Eldridge, Edith (Scott) Hill and Elsie (Scott) Godbehere in 1983/1984, Ethel (Godbehere) Lawrence, Mary (Keeling) Vaincourt, Audrey Forrester, Carol (Scott) Bellware, Ed Scott, Cara Godbehere, Dolly (Scott) Cave.  Information on the descendents of Elizabeth Scott and Samuel Boothby came from Brian Denson.  Lucy-Meyer Hubner and Teresa Pask have given me information on the descendents of Thomas Scott & Ann Pask.  Also, British Census Records from 1841 - 1911, birth, marriage, death, baptism & burial records & obituaries were used.  Notes on sources are included at the end of the genealogy.  At this time the notes are not cross-referenced to people in the genealogy.

Note:
From November 2008 to April 2018, I had started this genealogy with Thomas & Sarah Scott from Bristol.  This starting point was used by several different Scott family trees and seemed reasonable looking at the 1841 and subsequent census records, along with some baptism records.  These included the baptism of Henery Scott to Thomas & Sarah Scott of Bristol.  However, I did not look for any other possibility at that time.

Looking closely at the records, I found another Thomas & Sarah Scott in East Allington, Lincolnshire and their son Henry, my forebear, who is clearly identified as coming from East Allington.  Also, the 1851 census records show two Henry Scotts, one in Bristol & the other in East Allington.  I have changed the genealogy to reflect this change, and have included notes at the end of the genealogy.  Generations 1 and 2 have changed, except for Henry Scott in generation 2.

I am unable to locate any records of the birth, marriage and death of Thomas & Sarah in Lincolnshire, or any census records for them, but I doubt they came from Bristol or any other part of Gloucestershire.  Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire are close together while Gloucestershire is quite far away.  People were not too mobile in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Information on the family of Clara Wood
According to my aunts, Elsie (Scott) Godbehere and Edith (Scott) Hill:
Fred John Wood m Mary Ellen Parker, with children:  Joe, Fred, Bill, Averible, Sue, Nellie, Carrie, Clara.
Mary Ellen (Parker) Wood m Frederick Turner.

My mother, Gladys (Scott) Eldridge had Frederick Turner Wood m Mary Ellen Parker - she may have confused the 2 husbands.
(There is a reference to Harry Wood here - Fred's father?/brother?)

1891 census of Hillmorton, Warwickshire
Frederick Wood (1844, Soltombs, Herefordshire) m Mary E. Wood (1854, Ropsley, Leicestershire)

    Children:
William C. Wood (1879, Sheffield)
Harriet Wood (1882, Rugby, Worcestershire)
Edith Ellen Wood (1885, Rugby)
Clara Wood (1887, Rugby)
Clara A. Wood (1889, Hillmorton)
Susan M. Wood (1890, Hillmorton)

1901 Census
Edith Ellen Wood - servant to John & Emmy Leary. Brightside, Biertown, Yorkshire
Clara Wood - servant to Alfred & Amelia Garnett in Attercliffe cum Darnell, Yorkshire
(Alfred may have been a minister)

1901 census of Attercliffe cum Darnell, Yorkshire
George May (1845, Mitchell, Deasour, Hampshire) m Mary E. May (1855, Ropsley, Lincolnshire)
      Children:
Caroline M. Wood (1889, Hillmorton)
          Susan M. Wood (1891, Hillmorton)
          Thomas F. Wood (1894, Hillmorton)
Joe A. G. Wood (1897, Long Lawford, Warwickshire)

Assumptions & Questions regarding the Wood family:
Joe is Joe;  Fred is Thomas F., Bill is William, Sue is Susan, Clara is Clara, Carrie is Caroline,  Nellie is Edith Ellen?
Who is Clara A?  Who is Harriet?  Are they Averible?
Was Fred Turner a third husband of Mary Ellen Parker?

I couldn't match any of these names with any certainty in any other census records.

History of Herbert Scott's Family in Canada, from Gladys (Scott) Eldridge, Lovell Directories & Carol Bellware
Due to a strike at the Sheffield Steel Mills, the family immigrated to Montreal.  The family sailed from  Liverpool on Dec 15, 1920 aboard the Empress of France.  They landed in St. John, NB and arrived in Montreal on Dec 24, 1920 by train.
Eventually they settled in Pointe St. Charles.

The 1921 - 1924 editions of the Lovell Directory of Montreal have Herbert Scott, rollturner, at 1385 Ave de L’Eglise (Church Ave) in Cote St Paul, near Verdun. They lived in the second floor of a flat until May 1, 1925.  (May 1st is moving day in Montreal, when leases expire.)

The 1925 - 1929 editions of the Lovell Directory of Montreal have Herbert Scott, labourer at 3 Forfar St in Victoriatown (named for the nearby Victoria Bridge), commonly called Goose Village.   (It was named for the geese that were hunted on the nearby marshy waterfront.)  The 1930 - 1931 editions of the Lovell Directory of Montreal have Herbert Scott, labourer, at 1153 Forfar, while from 1932 - 1933 he was a mechanic, still at 1153 Forfar.

Goose Village was bulldozed in 1964 to pave the way for Expo 67 and Forfar disappeared with it.

See the following article for more on Goose Village.: http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/features/atoz/story.html?id=6d39295f-3cfd-4ec0-92ff-f59a1d89d5f3&k=10139

The 1934 - 1938 editions of the Lovell Directory of Montreal have Herbert Scott, steelworker, living at 1720 Mullin St., in the Pointe.  Beginning in 1935, he was listed as working for Dominion Steel until 1938.  Beginning 1939, he was listed as H. Scott at 529 Charron St., also in the Pointe.  In 1939 he was a labourer, but in 1940 was working at Peck Rolling Mills until his retirement in 1945 or 1946.  They remained at 529 Charron until 1951. They moved to Malton, Ontario to live with daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Jim Cassidy, but moved back in 1955 or 1956.  After a short stay with Dolly and Ken, they moved into 818 Liverpool - a 4 room flat with a half bathroom and no tub or shower.   (Son Phil and family moved into 529 Charron and remained there until 1960).  In 1959, they were at 543 Charron. Herbert and Clara lived there with daughter Edie, and later, Edie & and her husband, Willie Hill, in the Pointe before moving with them to 60-43rd Ave, Pincourt, Ile Perrot, in 1964 or 1965.

Obituary of Shirley Mae (Weber) GODBEHERE
DR. SHIRLEY MAE GODBEHERE (WEBER) Shirley Mae Godbehere (Weber) was born on June 15, 1926 in Portage la Prairie, MB and passed away on November 17, 2018 at Monashee Mews in Lumby, BC at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by her husband Dick in 2011 as well as by her parents, Norman and Gladys, sister Wilda (Len) Cronmiller and brother Tom. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Hilda (Tom) Weber, nephew Bryan (Carol) Weber and nieces, Diana (Don) Johnston and Donna Cronmiller, all of Winnipeg, Pamela (Robert) Caswill of Nova Scotia and Wendy (Michael) Cull of The Pas, and Dick's children, Claudia (Robert) Rivard of Surrey, BC, Bruce (Ruth) Godbehere of Comox, BC and Susan (Peter) Strack of Victoria, BC. Shirley was enthusiastic in everything she did. She was elected high school president in a landslide ("even though she was a girl" the local newspaper reported), and received the Governor General's medal while actively involved in the school's social and athletic programs, especially hockey. When she moved into residence at the University of Manitoba to earn her Home Economics degree, she became an active participant in the UMSU Women's Association, was appointed the faculty Lady Stick, and generally considered the "personality kid" in her residence - singing, cheerleading, playing the piano and acting as its sports leader. After graduation, Shirley continued her academic studies, obtaining her Masters from University of Minnesota in 1959 and her PhD from Cornell University in 1965. She returned to the University of Manitoba as a professor in its Home Economics faculty. Shirley was also actively involved in the Naval Reserve at HMCS Chippawa (Winnipeg) and it is here where she met Dick. They were married in 1972 and eventually relocated to Montreal, where Shirley taught at McGill University, and finally chose to retire to Vernon, BC. It was clear that Dick and Shirley were soulmates, equally sharing a passion for golf, road trips in their fifth-wheel, and many, many junkets to casinos along the way. While Shirley left Manitoba many years ago, she never forgot her roots. She loved to attend her high school and university reunions, and in memory of her parents she created the Weber Scholarship Fund at the University of Manitoba to provide financial assistance for students in and around Portage la Prairie. It is fitting that she directed her remains be returned to Portage la Prairie to be interred at the family plot at Hillside Cemetery with a family service. Memorial donations may be made to the Weber Scholarship Fund, the Montreal Diet Dispensary, the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, or the Alzheimer Society of BC.

After finishing school, she worked for Imperial, Rothmans and Northern Electric and as a domestic. She completed a Trained Attendants Course and worked for the St. Johns Ambulance and at the Montreal General and as a private nurse. After her marriage to Mart, Gladys became a full-time army wife and mother, raising her children during Marts frequent absences on duty. She lived in Shilo, Winnipeg, Soest and Montreal before moving back to Winnipeg in 1969. She was involved in many of her childrens and community activities as a volunteer. Gladys was a long-time member of the St. John Ladies Bowling League at the Uptown Lanes. In recent years, she belonged to the Winnipeg Seniors Choir and Bell Ringers. She was a regular participant in Aquacises at the Pan Am Pool. In her apartment block, she enjoyed the bingo and card nights. She appreciated the care and support she received at the Riverview Day Hospital. Time spent with her family and her five grandchildren was precious to her. Obituary of David Martin ELDRIDGE, CD
David Martin Eldridge (Mart) passed away from heart failure on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Poseidon Care Centre, with his son Roy at his side. His pain is finally gone. Born in Fredericton, NB, on June 29, 1925, to Roy and Mary Eldridge, Dave attended school in Fredericton and then St. John. He worked for two years at CPR prior to enlisting in the Army in 1944. He served in several bands in New Brunswick and Montreal until his discharge in 1946. He married Gladys Scott and they moved to Winnipeg where Dave was employed by Scofields and Coca Cola. In 1948 he reenlisted with the RCA band in Shilo. He served in the RCA and RCHA bands in Winnipeg. In 1962, he transferred to the Black Watch band in Gagetown, and was stationed in Soest, Germany and Montreal before returning to Winnipeg in 1969. Dave was in the Training/Air Command Band until his retirement from the Forces in 1975. He enjoyed the Army and the travel that took him across Saskatchewan, Northern Ontario, Europe and the Middle East. The highlight was travelling across Canada by train in 1967 with the Centennial Military Tattoo. He worked as a security officer for Bristol Aerospace until 1990. Never a car driver, he regularly rode his bicycle or took the bus to work. He learned piano and played the cornet with the Legion Boys Band in Fredericton and was a choir member at St. Paul's United Church. In Winnipeg, Dave was a member of the choirs of St. Andrew's Protestant and Charleswood United Church, often singing solo, and he later joined the Winnipeg Seniors Choir. He played the trumpet at the Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph for many years, and once served in a fanfare quartet on a stage with the Queen and Prince Philip. He was a member of the Legion for 63 years, and an honorary member of the War Amps. He enjoyed bowling, curling, a game of cards and bingo and loved his time spent at the Charleswood Lions Day Club. He coached hockey and baseball in Winnipeg, and both hockey and girls softball in Germany. Dave was a dedicated family man. From the time they were young, he would take his family to sporting events, swimming lessons, movies, bowling, picnics, the zoo and to the parks in Winnipeg. He continued this practice with his grandchildren, taking them out regularly on the bus for food and fun, and attending many of their activities. A gentle and friendly soul, he would seem to run into someone he knew every time he left the house. If he didn't meet someone he knew, he would always find someone to talk to. Dave was predeceased by his wife Gladys, his parents and brother Glendon, and son-in-law Mort. He is survived by son Roy and wife Debbie; grandsons, Matthew and fiancée Lisa, Mark and friend Hillary; daughters, Donna Morton and Heather (Steve) Hargreaves; granddaughters, Holly (Aaron) Robinson and Heidi (Ben) Page; great-granddaughters, Helena and Hilary Page; and grandson Sean Scott and friend Desha. We would like to thank the staff at Poseidon and especially those on the 4th floor for the care they provided. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Dad - Grandpa - GG - We love you so much. You were a big part of our lives and we will miss you. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
